NEFFA - 2010

Yuko, Marisa, Joann, Arpi, and Wendy all performed the Sevillanas at the New England Folk Festival (NEFFA) in Mansfield on Sunday.

We were a bit frustrated that a group right before us no-showed at the last minute. This would have meant that if we'd been able to think straight, we could have asked to do the Alegrias as well since we had time. But, it was 5 minutes before we had to go on, and there just wasn't time for an adjustment.

On a side note, we're not sure how the Hawaiian team got to do 3 musical numbers when we were cut to 4 minutes maximum. Not that we have anything against the Hawaiians. They're very nice. And they get to dance with weapons that look like quarter-staffs. Maybe that's how they got the extra time. They threatened violence. Aloha Hawaii.

In any event, it went well and the audience was getting into the OLEs.

Here is the team after our show.

Next weekend, Mayfair in Harvard Square.

Marking Time

The Regis show, Marcando Compas, was quite a good time. Batas were in sync. Costume changes went fairly smoothly.

There were some great photos taken. Here are a few of various members of Studio 3.

In the group picture, we have Wendy, Marisa, Amy, Joann, Melanie, and Cara.

In the Green Room, we have Melanie, Amy, Cara, and Ian.

This weekend is NEFFA.

Then next weekend is Mayfair which should be a good show.

In other news, we have finished our first demo reel. It can be viewed here.

The Demo Reel is a collection of some of our performances over the past year, including the Lowell Folk Festival, City Year Festival, a clip from Marcando Compas, and NEFFA as well.

And we'll keep adding and expanding to our collection of clips.

Clark International Gala

Despite weather and rush hour traffic, we all managed to arrive in time (just barely). It took 2 1/2 hours to get from Boston to Worcester that evening, which is probably not that unusual for a rainy Friday.

The audience was huge and the venue was full to capacity. There were several people outside trying to get in. The audience who did manage to get tickets were all enthusiastic to say the least.

It was fun to see the costumes of the other performers. Bolivia was on right before us and they looked amazing.

Another thing to note was this was the first time a faculty member performed at this show. Yuko set a precedence.

As we were leaving, a student from Spain thanked us for representing her country so well.

Here's a comment Yuko received from her friends.

"Just wanted to congratulate you on your performance last night. Now my husband and I thinking maybe we'd like to try flamenco...."

We performed a shortened version of an Alegrias we've performed in the past. Sabrina Aviles did the choreography. Sabrina also has classes for beginners.

We didn't know that the show was streamed live over the Internet. In addition, they posted our performance on YouTube.

Returning to Mayfair

And we haven't received all the details, but we will return to Mayfair on May 2nd in Harvard Square.

Nicole, Amy, and I had a great time last year. The team will have some additional members this year.

And, although the date isn't set yet, we'll return for the City Year Annual Gathering again. We're very much looking forward to it after the amazing reception from last year's event.
